The Festival of Lights
The Festival of Lights, known as Diwali, is one of the most important festivals in India. It is a five-day celebration of the victory of good over evil, and light over darkness. The tradition dates back thousands of years. Here’s everything you need to know about this unforgettable holiday:
Celebrating Diwali
Diwali is celebrated with great joy all over India. It is a time to pray to God for peace and prosperity. It is a time to gather with friends and family. A time to play games (like kabaddi) and eat delicious sweets (like gulab jamuns or burfi).
During Diwali, colorful candles and earthen oil lamps (called diyas) are used as decoration. Lighting agarbattis (incense sticks) is also a common. Gifts are given to family and friends, with the belief it will bring them luck in the coming year. You can even light fireworks!
The festival is celebrated by many different and diverse people who have their own characteristic ways of enjoying it. For example, Hindus may light candles or make offerings to Lakshmi (their goddess of good fortune), while Jains may be do something similar using lamps!
However you celebrate Diwali, some things are the same: it is a festival where you spend time with friends and family. Enjoy the beautiful lights and sing songs. Play games and dance with your loved ones. Lastly, don’t forget the sweets or the savory snacks!
May this Diwali your life be as colorful and bright as the lights and lanterns lit during its celebration. May joy and gaiety surround you and your family forever. Happy Diwali from Palace Foods!
